This Day In History

1907 – Chicago White Sox Ed Walsh no-hits NY Highlanders, 8-1 in 5 inning game

This event was about baseball player Edward Augustine “ Big Ed” Walsh throwing his first nine inning no hitter for the victory against New York Highlanders back in May 26, 1907. Walsh ended up giving no hits in the 5th inning to help his team win to a 8-1 victory. On top of that Walsh wasn’t done, He also thew 5 one hitter games in his past games. Walsh ended up leading the baseball league with a total of 225 strikeouts and the Hall of Famer pitched until 1917 with the total stats under his belt of 195-126 record an 1.82 ERA, according to Baseball History Daily.

After reading about this event, I found it every interesting that even back in the day, sports stats were still recorded, saved and taken as series as they are now. I would have thought that people just played the game and took basic scores, like who hit a home run, how many outs a player gets a game etc. Seeing how that even though they didn’t have the technology we have now. They really cared about the sport of itself. I enjoyed this topic because pitching a no-hitter is a very big deal in baseball. For Walsh to give up no hits in the 5th at all against the New York Highlanders and of course win the game 8 to 1 is very impressive. This would have been a great game to see on television.

Sports Event Bucket List

  • Attend a super bowl with New England Patriots in the finals

Being a Patriots fan, I still have yet to attended one of there football games, but this was because I lived in a household with a bunch of New York Giants fans. Of course we went to giants games but nothing would be better than watching the New England Patriots in a SuperBowl and of course win the game as well.

  • Attend a Boston Red Sox game

Being a Boston Red Sox fan wouldn’t be the only reason that I would attend a Red Sox game but because the stadium itself is historic. Known as the oldest baseball park in the U.S but I would enjoy seeing famous “Green Monster”!

  • Attend a Los Angeles Lakers NBA game

As most of you know, basketball is not only a sport that I enjoy to play but it’s a sport that I enjoy to watch as well. Even though, I prefer to play basketball then watch it. Nothing would be more fulfilling then attending a live basketball game of my favorite team. Hopefully, Kobe Bryant will still be playing when I attend one of the games.

  • Go to a live horse Racing event

With this being a something I watch every year with my mother and I still have yet to attend a horse race. This is a sporting event I look forward to attending with my mother in the future. From always seeing it on TV to finally seeing the action live and feeling the excitement. I hear it’s ten times more exciting and nerve racking live in action.

  • Saratoga Race Course Saratoga in Springs, NY

Known as one of the oldest sporting venus in the United States. Every year, I bet on the horse racing events at Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes and The Belmont Stakes. My mother and I have always betted on these races, not saying it was a lot of money, but the excitement that came when betting and watching the race with my mother was what I loved about the sport.

TV Sports Then & Now

TV Sports Then & Now

Which sports have maintained their value and appeal over the years?

Sports that have maintained their value and appeal throughout the years were Baseball, Basketball, Football, Boxing, and Horse racing. The reason these sports have continued to stay on top of sports entertainment is because they engage the fans. With everyone favoring different teams and players that they enjoy watching will have the viewer engaged to continue to watch their sport. Another reason why these have become mainstream is because these are the sports shown on TV for viewers to watch. If Barrel jumping was shown, as much as football, I am pretty sure they would have a great following of fans as well.

Which sports have lost their impact and why do you fell that has happened?

Sports that have lost their impact were rocking climbing, tree climbing, barrel jumping. If you notice these sports are not very engaging with the fans. They are very straight to the point with no action really. Not only was there not a lot of action, but also they didn’t get aired as much as the mainstream sports. These sports didn’t get the publicly seen like basketball or footballs to even insure them a spot as a successful sport.

Palone Sets World harness racing win record

Date: Nov. 15, 2014

http://www.si.com/horse-racing/2014/11/15/ap-rac-harness-racing-record

This article talks about how Dave Palone earning this record career victory at The Meadow Racetrack & Casino out in Pittsburgh. He also was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall back in 2010.The reason why this sport was not popular was because of the actual sports of horse racing. This sport seems like a breakoff sport from the normal horse racing. With that being said this sport doesn’t have that viewer catch like horse racing does. An example is that Horse racing has betting as well as the well own Triple Crown races that happen every year. Getting the fans a chance to feel apart of the action.

Interviews:

Scenario A:

What are the storylines you would focus on going into the interview?

Questions I would ask the quarterback are how does it feel to throw 316 yard and touchdowns despite losing game? Why do you think your team didn’t lacked in? What could you guys have done better as a team to insure the win? Even though this player lost his game. These are question that the viewer would like answer to as well.

What do you need to know?

I need to know what’s the quarterbacks stand point on the game and his team. I don’t want him bashing his teammates because he doesn’t care. I need to know who was injured before the game and after the game. I need to know his stats for his whole team.

What are the questions you would ask to get that information?

The questions I would ask to insure getting some information for the player would be what could have went better during the game? How does this outcome affect this what your prediction for the rest of the season? How does playing your first team feel? Does it feel good to be back?

   Scenario B:

What are the storylines you would focus on going into the interview?

The storylines I would focus on are what is the purpose of attempting this dangerous stunt? I would make sure to try and make sure he stays on topic with the question when he tries to detour away from it.

What do you need to know?

I need to know a lot. There is one main question I need an answer too and that is why is it so important to do this stunt. What is it going to do for his career and what is he aiming to do if he achieves this.

What are the questions you would ask to get that information?

I would ask a couple of general questions that I am sure everyone wants answers too. What impact is this going to have on your life? A lot of people are saying this is a stupid stunt and anything could go wrong, what’s your stand point after hearing this?

Mayweather vs Pacquiao Fight had a predictable outcome

The question is, was this fight worth your time and money? Easy answer, this fight was nowhere near worth $99 to watch. Everyone was expecting to watch one of the most memorable boxing matches that they have seen in while, but what they got was a boring disappointing 12 rounds. At the end of the day, we all knew that Floyd Mayweather was going to take the victory. Did I want him to win? The answer is no, I didn’t want Mayweather to take this match. A lot of spectators would agree with how this match seemed to be all about the money. Both parties made over 100 million for just to make it to 12 rounds. In my eyes, both parties did it for the cash money. I would easily go 12 rounds for the fans and make some easy cash. Some say that, Pacquiao may have been the reason for the boring fight due to him having a shoulder injury. This was a very close fight and I do think that if Pacquiao didn’t have a bad shoulder; the fight could have easily gone in his favor. As for Mayweather, I knew he was going to fight very defensive and very strategic to insure he gets the win. This was no surprise. A lot of viewers are confusing UFC with boxing. Boxing is a strategic sport where you want to out box your opponent. Not just go all out in the first round. Personally I am happy I didn’t pay for the fight, as it was not worth it. A better option would be to bar hop downtown and watch the fight for free while enjoying the night. Overall, Both parties made a large amount of money for going to 12 rounds. In my book, they are both winners, no doubt.
